Me Before You 2016

Me Before You 2016 Movie Review

The trailer looks good, but now that have actually read the book, which I marathoned through when I heard a movie was being made, I have a very specific way that I hope they shoot the ending and I think I'll be disappointed. I want to see jump cuts between Lou and Will at the French cafe as Lou reads Will's letter, and as Lou stands to leave, I want to cut back to Will standing as if to go, and then the last cut as a closeup of a hint of a smile.

The Huntsman: Winter's War 2016 Movie Review

Discover the story that came before Snow White in The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles from Snow White and the Huntsman, joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain.

Theron stars as evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Blunt) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love.

As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between them is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Hemsworth). Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Chastain)—the only woman who has ever captured his heart—Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister…or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.

Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in this breathtaking prequel in the legendary saga that is directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. This spring, find out who will win the war between good and evil in the epic action-adventure The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

Nina Forever 2015

Nina Forever 2015 Movie Review

"Nina Forever" has been talked about since it's screening at Fantasia International Film Festival this year, and rightfully so. It's a movie that is hard to categorize into only one genre but still feels complete and secure in its choices. If I were to put it in one genre, then it would be "romance", yet somewhere in this dark love triangle we find comedy, horror, drama, gore, eroticism and pure love. Our emotions are played with in "Nina Forever", and it's exciting to be part of from start to finish.

The movie follows Holly and Rob, a young couple who fell in love after meeting each other at work. Holly found herself fascinated that Rob had recently attempted suicide and decided to muster up the courage to talk to him. Rob doesn't tell her the reasons why, but after a night of passionate sex it is revealed to her that Rob lost his girlfriend in a car crash. Holly finds this out because his girlfriend, Nina, comes back to life while they are having sex. She continues to torment the couple every time they have sex.

The wonderful thing about this kooky concept is that we have no distinct answers as to why Nina returns, but it never makes us question it. We feel involved but we don't let the mystery of Nina get in the way of what actually matters in the movie - the love story. This is not the first movie where a dead ex-girlfriend returns to life. In fact, there have been a few recently with Joe Dante's "Burying the Ex" and "Life After Beth". Both of those movies follow a recognizable formula, but "Nina Forever" is its own thing entirely. Nina doesn't come back as a zombie that the couple have to deal with and try to hide from people. Nina comes back as something else, more of a ghost, and only comes back during sex to make life harder for the couple.

Thanks to the comedy, which is not too crazy or out there, we can relate to this strange story and connect to it as a love drama rather than a horror movie. That doesn't mean that it isn't charged with several dark, twisted things. There are scenes that could be qualified as necrophilia, several scenes of graphic gore, and a whole lot of nudity and steaming hot sex scenes (always followed by a bloody mess in the bed as Nina makes her entrance). Luckily the movie remains hard to classify because it doesn't choose to focus on one thing specifically, and this leaving us with the wonderful movie that "Nina Forever" is.

Abigail Hardingham, Cian Barry and Fiona O'Shaughnessy make up the lead trio of actors and I am pretty sure that the Blaine guys would have had some problems on their hands if it weren't for these three. In a movie as odd as this it is important that all parts understand exactly what they are trying to achieve. These three lovely actors could not have had an easy time on their hands, trying to balance all of the important ingredients to make "Nina Forever" as lasting and engaging as it is. It could easily have slipped into the realms of bland or trying too hard, but it never does.

"Nina Forever" is one of the bloodier romances, but don't confuse that with being a horror movie. It shows several aspects of a horror movie, obviously, but there is a heavy focus on comedy, drama and romance as much as there is on blood and gore. It's a fresh take on several old genres and I can't help but think that this will be on many people's minds after they have seen it. Whether "Nina Forever" sounds like it would be up your alley or not, it is a movie that I highly recommend to all of our readers.

Ip Man 3 2015

Ip Man 3 2015 Movie Review

I will try to keep this spoiler free.

Donnie Yen returns for Ip Man 3, and despite being produced by the same team, the theme that is explored... is that much deeper.

Ip Man focuses on "Survival", Ip Man 2 focuses on Everyday Life and Making a Living, while Ip Man 3 focuses on "Life" itself.

The audience will need to pay attention to details to enjoy the movie fully, starting from the first scene, and really understand how the first scene relates to the whole story. So... REMEMBER the first scene! (The Butterfly Scene)

There are subtle hints hidden in the move, be it Bruce Lee's quote of "Be Like Water" or "One-Inch Punch" where viewers really need to pay attention to the story and choreography to understand.

Ip Man 1 and 2 focuses on grounded action, and realistic choreography. Ip Man 3 has that, but added another layer of beauty to the movie, thanks to Yuen Woo Ping(Matrix, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon)'s choreography. The details of every fight scene can be enjoyed and explored.

While many think that Ip Man 3 will be just a martial arts exhibition, but the team managed to bring in a layer of emotion we have not seen in 1 and 2.

Donnie's Ip Man is now a much more grounded, humble and just that neighborhood family guy we all love.

Donnie Yen's performance here is nothing sort of amazing.

Lynn Hung's performance is also outstanding.

All in all, the movie may not please all critics and fans who ONLY loves hard-hitting action, but if you are looking at an Ip Man movie with Great action, great humour and that sense of touch with a love story, then Ip Man 3 is the best in the series.

You're My Boss 2015

You're My Boss 2015 Movie Review

It will be difficult to separate 'YOU'RE MY BOSS' from countless similar movies piling up in its category—its material isn't new, in fact overly familiar, and has already made several romcom flicks into blockbusters—but it will be even harder to dismiss its striking attributes, no matter how few, that makes it truly a stand out.

The movie is helmed by Antoinette Jadaone, director of last year's indie hit "That Thing Called Tadhana", which became even bigger when it got mainstream release last February. That alone, makes "YOU'RE MY BOSS" different. Through Jadaone's artistry, the movie receives a treatment that imbues the storytelling with mystifying appeal. Once again, Jadaone utilizes nature to effectively convey the intentions of the story, making the breathtaking imagery of Batanes work to magnify the level of emotions governing both our lead characters and their story. Toni Gonzaga delivers her character with utmost credibility here, but its Coco Martin's irresistible charm that makes their surprising chemistry, truly believable. The movie is naturally funny and loud, but on moments where its most quiet, it treads on themes that usually streak pain and sadness through the heart, and on those instances, 'YOU'RE MY BOSS' highlights the enchanting sceneries of Batanes, to surely hit its aim.

YOU'RE MY BOSS's sentiments echo almost the same ones that made That Thing Called Tadhana, Starting Over Again and One More Chance, relatably haunting and poignant. Its two lead characters—Georgina, a highly confident and manipulative woman, masking her personal tragedies by dedicating herself almost entirely to work, and Pong, her simple and unassuming assistant—are both haunted by their respective pasts, and are desperately trying to break free from them, and move on.

The movie, regardless of how it's being naturally charming with its humor and cheesy narrative, manages to strike a chord by sending messages that tackles the disaters of waiting, and hoping, for a love lost, and the promises of second chances and forgiveness. Albeit formulaic and cliché, YOU'RE MY BOSS is a satisfying movie not devoid of charm. It surely isn't bereft of imperfections, nonetheless, where it truly matters, it immensely satisfies.

Dirty Grandpa 2016

Dirty Grandpa 2016 Movie Review

Not much worse to a film fan than shelling out $12 dollars to go see a decent actor waste his skills on low information trash like this. I know that the same class of stoners who think Adam Sandler's latest outing in The Ridiculous 6 is funny will also find this disgusting waste of screen time funny. I for one do not and as I write this I long for IMDb to do the right thing and enable a zero rating for movies as that is the true first number and this is another in a long series of Hollywood efforts that deserves that true first number the zero. To say that Robert De Niro has sunk to this low in cinema just to increase his bank account by what ever amount they paid him is a shame, as he certainly could not have taken on this schlock in order to increase his range of acting expression. He could have simply hit his thumb with a hammer and the resulting dialog would not have been any worse, perhaps it would have been better. As he did not do so we will never know.

Viva 2016

Viva 2016 Movie Review

At the screening, the director, Paddy gave an introduction about his personal experience with seeing a drag performance years ago where an individual was having the best time of their lives. He said that those who knew the performer were crying due to the fact that that was the only place this individual could truly be who they were.

That introduction set the mood for the movie. I'm afraid if I wasn't lucky enough to have the director give some backstory I would've liked it less.

The beginning of the film had a few clichés. A troubled protagonist unsure of how to make money, family issues, shopping in record stores. As it went on the clichés dwindled, immersing the audience in Cuba. Our main character's routine continued, and I found myself falling more into his psyche. His family issues became more relevant, his troubles were mine, and even the records had an important role in the story.

By the end people around me were weeping.

The only note I had was that there were a handful of times where moments should've been longer. Just an extra few seconds on those emotional scenes would've gone a long way. Not sure if that's a directing or editing critique.

I'm afraid of using an incorrect term here, so forgive me if I do. But as LGBT rights continue to finally be as important as they should've been decades ago, it's great to see more films like this, especially when they are well done. I hope this film gets the recognition it deserves.
